In January of 1928, Adele got a terrible headache. Three days later, she died from what was believed to be meningitis – an inflammation of the brain. Before she died, Adele requested that Klimt’s paintings be donated to the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria. But Ferdinand could not bear to part with the portraits of his wife.
